SINGLES MARKING
Those who act as Markers for the Singles competitions make a vital contribution to the Tournaments. PLEASE VOLUNTEER IF YOU POSSIBLY CAN. For those who may be unsure of the exact duties of a marker, the following summary and hints may be of assistance.
- Centre the jack. A jack delivered to less than 2 metres from the ditch shall be moved out to be 2 metres from the ditch (2 metre measuring sticks are provided at the end of each rink)
- After centring, check that the jack is not less than 23 metres from the front edge of the mat. If in doubt, call for the Umpire.
- Stand to one side of the rink at least 1 metre behind the head and make sure you shadow is not falling on the head.
- Answer precisely the players' enquiries. Do not volunteer any 'helpful' information and do not move into the head unless asked to do so. Answer questions only from the player who is in possession of the mat.
- Mark all "touchers" as soon as they come to rest. Remove marks from "non-touchers"
- Mark the position of jack and touchers in the ditch with the markers provided. (White marker for jack, red for touchers)
- Remove "dead" bowls from the green and the ditch. (With the agreement of both players)
- Carefull measure all doubtful shots when asked to do so. DO NOT MOVE OR REMOVE ANY BOWLS OR THE JACK. ASK THE PLAYERS TO REMOVE BOWLS NOT IN CONTENTION IF NECESSARY. NO ONE BUT THE PLAYERS OR UMPIRE MAY MOVE ANYTHING IN THE HEAD UNTIL BOTH PLAYERS HAVE AGREED THE NUMBER OF SHOTS SCORED.
- At the completion of each end enter the score on the scorecard and update the scoreboard for the benefit of players and spectators. (It is advisable to record the number of ends played on the scoreboard as a double check that each end has been recorded on the card.)
- Return the card (signed by the players) to Control at the end of the game
- Ensure you have a pen, chalk and measure and ideally wedges to support leaning bowls when measuring
IF IN DOUBT OVER ANY ASPECT OF THE GAME OR THE CARRYING OUT OF ANY MEASUREMENT REQUIRED - CALL FOR THE UMPIRE!
